To boost competitiveness amidst this autumn’s wave of releases, Immortal Legacy is priced at $40

The highly anticipated first-person action “Soulslike” game Undying Legacy has been confirmed to have a price point of $40. The publisher stated that this price was chosen because the release schedule for major titles this autumn is exceptionally crowded, driven by the launch of GTA6.

In a statement, publisher Lyrical Games said: “We’ve had many discussions about the pricing of Undying Legacy over the past year. We believe the game is capable of competing head-to-head with many full-priced ($70) titles in terms of quality, polish, and its 20-hour narrative. However, there are simply too many games coming out this autumn, and there is fierce competition for players’ time and money.”

Undying Legacy had previously been delayed from September 24 to October 13 to avoid clashing with titles like Remedy’s Control: Resonance and Konami’s Silent Hill: Townfall, but GTA6 is also set for release just a month later. The publisher hopes that a lower price point compared to some competitors will help Undying Legacy stand out, though this strategy carries a risk: some players might perceive the game as being of lower quality than higher-priced titles.

In an interview with The Game Business, Lyrical Games head Blake Rochkind elaborated on the decision, acknowledging that pricing was “something we really agonized over for a long time.” He said: “My biggest concern was that this price point might send the wrong message to players. Yet, it was precisely confidence that drove our decision. Objectively speaking, this autumn is shaping up to be the most chaotic release season in the industry’s history, and we happen to be one of the few brand-new IPs launching during this window. Not only do we have the towering presence of GTA in November, but there’s also the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, Control: Resonance arriving in a few weeks, plus Silent Hill: Townfall, Phantom Blade Zero, Gears of War, Call of Duty… Given our development schedule, this is the hand we were dealt: we are one of the few new IPs launching this autumn. We have a great deal of confidence in Immortal Legacy. Ultimately, the worst thing we could do is shy away from placing our bet—to be afraid to clearly say: ‘We want this to be a game you pick up alongside those other great titles.'”

His point is that Immortal Legacy can serve as a title players might easily add to their cart alongside another—likely more expensive—game, and the $40 price point makes that decision easier. For instance, someone might already plan to buy GTA VI (with a starting price of at least $80), yet in the weeks leading up to that, they might not mind spending half that amount to pick up and play Immortal Legacy.

Developed by the team behind Ghostrunner, Immortal Legacy is a first-person “Soulslike” game. Players take on the role of a soldier who once served in Napoleon’s army; after awakening from the dead, they must battle shambling hordes and frenzied monsters, dying time and time again in the process.
